Dr. Perlmutter Academic Scholarship Fund
Open to Temple Beth Am member children of all ages — from Early Childhood through 5th Grade — this need-based scholarship provides support for education and grants more students the opportunity to attend Rambam Day School.
Temple Beth Am is pleased to announce the establishment of the Dr. Irwin Perlmutter Academic Scholarship Fund, a generous gift of $500,000 from Eliza & Hugh Culverhouse in honor of Irwin Perlmutter, M.D., renowned South Florida neurosurgeon and founding member of Temple Beth Am.
Irwin Perlmutter, M.D. graduated from Columbia University and the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, followed by service as a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy during World War II for four years in the South Pacific.
Dr. Perlmutter’s career as a neurosurgeon, which began in Coral Gables, is described as legendary and brilliant. He was the first Chief of Neurosurgery for Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami in the early 1950s, and he saved and enhanced the lives of so many patients at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Mt. Sinai Hospital, Miami Children Hospital, Baptist, South Miami and Doctors Hospitals.
Dr Perlmutter was recognized by many prestigious neurosugery societies starting with The Harvey Cushing Society in 1954. He was Professor Emeritus of Neurosurgery at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
He and and his late wife, Corinne, were proud to be Founders of Temple Beth Am.
While living in North Carolina following his retirement from the practice of medicine, Dr. Perlmutter co-founded The Free Clinics in Hendersonville for those without access to health care.
