MJFF – The City
The City
Prepare to be swept off your feet as the dazzling Israeli musical, which has taken Israel by storm and smashed box office records, finally makes its highly anticipated stateside debut in Miami! Brace yourself for an exhilarating fusion of Hebrew musicals interwoven with the soulful rhythms of pop music, the intrigue of neo-noir, and the heart-pounding thrill of detective cinema, all converging in a groundbreaking drama.
Right from its very first frame, The City radiates an undeniable, wildly inventive brilliance, seamlessly melding the noir essence of The Maltese Falcon with the futuristic noir of Blade Runner. The story is told through the eyes of Joe, its sad-sack Philip Marlowe-type hero, a jaded and resentful detective navigating a corrupt and deteriorating urban landscape. One stormy night, Joe’s office is visited by Sarah Bennett, a beautiful woman, who tells him about the mysterious disappearance of her sister. Despite his suspicions that Sarah might be harboring secrets of her own, Joe decides to take the case — a decision that could cost him his life.
All this unfolds through the captivating rhythm of music and song, punctuated by an impressive array of 15 musical numbers and an abundance of clever puns. While there have been many Israeli movie musical productions before, this one stands out as a pioneering feat, masterfully capturing the essence of the genre while delivering an unparalleled cinematic experience that leaves an unforgettable mark.
The special premiere event will feature actor/director Amit Ulman in attendance to introduce the film and participate in a Q&A afterward.
