April is Autism Acceptance Month
At Temple Beth Am, we recognize the unique needs of children with autism and are committed to providing opportunities that support their growth, confidence, and well-being. One of the most valuable skills we can offer is swim instruction, tailored to meet the needs of children of all abilities.
Drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death for children with autism, making water safety an essential life skill. In fact, children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are 160 times more likely to drown than their neurotypical peers. Many children on the spectrum are drawn to water but may lack the instinctual fear or ability to navigate aquatic environments safely. This heightened risk underscores the critical importance of swim lessons, which provide children with essential safety skills, improve motor function, and boost overall confidence in the water.
Through Movement Works by Claudia Gomes, we offer dedicated swim classes designed for children of all abilities, including those on the autism spectrum. Our instructors create a structured, sensory-friendly environment that accommodates individual needs, ensuring that every child feels comfortable and supported. Adaptive teaching methods, such as visual schedules, repetition, and one-on-one instruction, help children learn at their own pace while gaining confidence and independence in the water.
Beyond safety, swimming also provides significant developmental benefits for children with ASD. Studies have shown that swimming improves coordination, social skills, and sensory processing, all of which can have a lasting impact on a child’s overall well-being. Water-based activities offer a unique form of therapy, helping children regulate emotions, build muscle strength, and develop focus.
As we observe Autism Acceptance Month, we encourage families to explore the benefits of swim lessons for their children. By fostering inclusion and providing essential life skills, we empower children of all abilities to thrive both in and out of the water. Together, we can create a safer, more supportive environment where every child has the opportunity to succeed.
